The Nigerian Maritime Law Association was immensely honoured and privileged to share its hopes and expectations for the Nigerian maritime industry in the 21st century at the inaugural stakeholders’ interactive session with Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the new Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The event took place on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN was ably represented by the Second Vice-President, Mr. Olumide Sofowora, SAN, who led a delegation of maritime lawyers to the event. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the significant work of our predecessors, highlight our accomplishments, and set objectives.
The Association commended NIMASA for its policy reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing the ease of doing business in the ports and creating a level playing field for stakeholders in the industry.
In line with the Association’s core objectives, we intend to further engage with NIMASA on the need to lead the charge on the signing, ratification, and domestication of the United Nations Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships, also known as the “Beijing Convention on the Judicial Sale of Ships”. This Convention provides certainty and clarity on judicial orders related to the forced sale of ships which are subjects of civil maritime claims or regulatory interventions, such as wrecks or detained vessels involved in piracy and maritime offences – issues central to NIMASA’s role in the Blue Economy.
We congratulate Dr. Dayo Mobereola on his appointment and wish him divine wisdom and understanding to navigate the challenges of his exalted office.
